Growing up in Michigan, summer felt like the heart of a Midwest childhood. From washing your hair in the lake off the dock to car rides with the windows down to the Dairy Mat for dipped cones, there was something endlessly special about those long, sun-soaked days. At its peak, a Midwest summer feels almost suspended in time — like the golden evenings and slow days might somehow last longer than winter ever could.
Every summer, my family would spend weekends at Higgins Lake, days were filled with laying on the dock, sailing across the hourglass-shaped lake, and driving into town for powdered sugar donuts and gift shop treasures that somehow always became keepsakes.
There’s a feeling that comes when summer reaches its peak — when the days begin to blur together, tan lines deepen, and the Michigan cherries are perfectly ripe. I wanted Farmers Daughter to capture that unmistakable midsummer feeling, where cherry pie and watermelon feta salad fill the table, and sparklers and fireflies dance around the edges of the gathering.
Whether it’s having the girls over for a post–farmers market brunch spread, a late-night bonfire by the water, or a date night on the beach with a bottle of wine and takeout, I wanted hosting this kit to feel like the sweetest slice of summer.
